The view looking over the laptop is of the wood stove, boxes of kindling, cherry firewood that is very beautiful when you split it. Behind me is a desktop computer that I use for drawing images from my books. Besides the computer is a table holding a landline telephone, a modem, clumps of wires, a hand-carved wood tray containing keys that unlock objects long lost and forgotten, computer gizmos no longer relevant, a pencil sharpener that I screwed to the table top and that is now in the way. Above the table is book shelf holding DVDs, crap, manuscripts, magazines, and, yes, books. To my right is more clutter: manila files (I have no idea what is them), a printer, a hand vacuum cleaner (used only once since I bought it six months ago in hopes of become neater). Behind the printer table is a three foot long, two foot high wooden tool chest, on top of which is an Olivetti Lettera 35 manual typewriter that I keep for old times sake. The tool chest holds back a cord and an half of firewoodsugar maple, ash, cherry, red oakthat I cut, split, and stacked myself. Some day, no doubt I will chain saw part of body to feed the crows. To my left is a table that holds the MacAir that I use to type on when I am composing from my cot, which is beside the table. Below are boots, slippers, shoes, briefcase, bottle of booze, cheap plastic files containing yet more crap. Every office has to have cot or a couch, for napping, for musing, and for writing half here and half in la-la from the supine position. Over the cot is a crooked poster of Jack Kerouac holding a cat, a painting by Arthur Herrick, book shelf, crucifix left over from Catholic upbringing. At the moment the office is missing my iPad, which I gave away to my daughter when she visited a couple weeks ago. I am awaiting a new iPad, which I will use for hand-written notes. I actually prefer to write on yellow legal notepads, but its a pain in the ass to organize such notes. The iPad apps Touchwriter and Penultimate allow for the organization of handwritten notes, which is actually quite useless since I never look back at old notes, but is good for giving me the illusion of organization, which leads to false confidence which is almost as good as the real thing and is necessary for this writer to produce transitive verbs. Another missing item from my office is my collection of sticks. Back before my wife and I built a house in Westmoreland, NH, we lived in West Lebanon, NH, where we raised our two daughters. The girls and their friends had no respect for my literary career, so I was forced to build a faux cabin inside my garage to escape them. Along the edge of the ceiling I hung sticks, hundreds of them. I would cut them 16 1/2 inches long, notch the tops, tie a string round the notch, and hang sticks along the top of the walls. I thought they were very beautiful. When we moved I took the sticks down and burned them as kindling. Back in 1998 I had a tattoo made on the back of my hand of a stick with a string around it. It represents my identity as a maker: make a poem, make a novel, make an essay, make a drawing, make a wooden spoon, make a stick sculpture, make a mess. Oh, one more thing: cat. When we analyze Meursault, we see him as a true symbol of what telling the truth is. The consequences brought by it in his life, take it to the point that all his society began to look him differently, they become indifferent to him, and why? Just because he used to tell the truth about his feelings, he didn’t complicate his life and he was honest with everyone and especially to himself. Sure, not everyone agreed with his ideology so they decided to go so far as killing him considering that this was what he deserved. And lest think, who are we to judge others? But she is so sure of what she knows, of what she feel, that nothing would stop her to finally find that, the truth she have been looking for so long with despair. One important note is that Paulina is not looking to make it public. She just wants to hear it again, she wants to find the guilty and especially what she wants is that this guilty be aware of what he do. We can discuss the different reasons why Paulina decides to do that, to recall the past and not let it go. Why she wants to hear the story from the lips of this man? Perhaps some will consider it as an act of pride, others consider it as a form of therapy. I see it as finally be able to leave everything behind, like a new beginning. But now we have to see the other path: Lying. As we have seen lying is easier than telling the truth, and there are different ways of doing it: (lying for omission, commission, over exaggeration and under exaggeration)[1]. Lying is part of our day to day. Is so simple as omitting a name, a number with an objective, we do not want that other person to know because of his reaction. Or sometimes we lie to ourselves because we already know the truth, we refuse to see admit it, looking for other excuses. And is dangerous when we reach a point when we believe our own lies. Because if this happens, then our world would begin to distort, and we would begin to complicate about what truth is and what a lie is. Blanche, has reached this limit. She believes in a story that she has mentally made up about who she is. Losing in this way her true identity, believing she is someone she really is not. How do his happen? For self-deception, because she was not satisfied with whom she was, and because she knows that lying she would get the attention and respect of others, which is what she is looking for. So we see that unlike the other two first characters, she does care and a lot of what others think about her. And she usually is based on these opinions to keep changing and in the same way continue lying herself. Creating in this way a personality she doesn’t have, with the only purpose of feeling that she is reaching perfection in others eyes. Finally we see an epithet of what denial means: Eddie. Similarly, he lies to himself simply because he does not want to admit something, because he knows is perverse. Unlike Blanche, he is not guided by others comments, he cares more of what he feels, especially for what his conscience may dictate him. For Eddie lying is very simple, and he does it all the time, he lies to his wife, to his niece, friends and others. But for the way he then acts after every lie, we can see that both he tries to deny and hide something that would finally come to light. In conclusion lie and truth will always be two ways that are going to be present in our life. It is important to keep in mind the value of truth, that even if it hurts, it will be always the best choice for us. Lying usually takes you to continue doing so, to create something that will be very difficult to go back. We should think what is best, lest take for example the life of these characters, that being extremism is not the solution. If we decide to tell the truth, we must take into account how others will react and that would be the best way to tell it. No one says that truth is easy, but at least it would helps us to keep our soul and conscience clean.
